The overall goal of temple hollowing treatment, also known as temple filler rejuvenation for hollowing, is to create a more aesthetically-pleasing shape in this area of the face, which serves to create a smoother transition between the area around the eyes, the cheek bones, and the temple hairline area. In many cases, this also serves to create a lifting effect on the outer tail of the brow, and can enhance the appearance of your eyes as well.
Although sometimes overlooked, hollow temples are a very important area to consider for cosmetic facial rejuvenation. Hollow temples can frequently be an area where people don’t fully recognize the extent of volume deficiency, and the effect that this deficiency can have on the shape of the face, or the appearance of other facial structures until it is pointed out. Some patients will be able to identify that they don’t quite like the shape around this area of the face, while other patients may have a more subconscious awareness of temple hollowing, sometimes even styling their hair to cover the area and conceal these hollows, without necessarily identifying the reason they aren’t happy with the appearance.
Over time, we tend to lose volume and fullness in the face as normal facial fat pads tend to shrink. For some patients, deeper bone structure in the temple areas, smaller temporalis muscles, or genetically smaller fat pads can also give the appearance of excess hollowing in the temples. Sometimes, patients that are very physically fit, have an overall lower body fat content, or are heavy into aerobic exercise, can show more evidence of hollowing in the temple areas.
Although some degree of concavity of the temples is normal, excess concavity in this area can disrupt the normal contours and transitions of the face. Excess hollowing here can also cause the bones around the eyes and the cheeks to appear more prominent, creating the appearance of more angular features that may be considered as less attractive or associated with advanced aging.
Temple rejuvenation for hollowing involves a very delicate and sensitive area of the face. With his advanced sub-specialty training and background in Oculofacial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Lewen maintains a detailed appreciation for the complex anatomy of the temples and other such areas around the eyes and face. Due to the sensitive nature of this area, these injections should be performed by a qualified, board-certified surgeon. Dr. Lewen will typically perform most temple rejuvenation for hollowing procedures with the use of a blunt-tipped cannula. This advanced injection technique also has the added benefits of improved patient comfort and less bruising when compared to facial filler injections that are performed with a needle. Before your treatment, the office staff will apply some numbing cream to the areas that are being treated. During your consultation, Dr. Lewen will make recommendations to you regarding the type and amount of facial filler product that will help you achieve the most aesthetic temple augmentation. Afterward, these areas will be carefully prepped to ensure that all makeup and oils are removed from the skin, and that the skin surface is sterile.
After your procedure is completed, Dr. Lewen’s staff will provide you with ice to apply to the treated temple areas, and you will be given a detailed post-procedure instruction sheet.
Every patient is somewhat different in terms of the healing time required after a temple filler rejuvenation for hollowing procedure. Procedures that require more product volume will typically have slightly more healing time required. Although Dr. Lewen utilizes advanced injection techniques to minimize bruising as much as possible, this can still occur with these injections, and you should also expect some degree of swelling in the treated area afterward. Applying ice to the treated area immediately afterward and for the first 24 to 48 hours will significantly reduce the risk of additional bruising and swelling in the area. Arnica, a homeopathic remedy, may also help to alleviate swelling and bruising somewhat faster. With most temple augmentation procedures, there is minimal associated bruising afterward, although there can be varying degrees of swelling present.
There is little to no downtime required after temple filler rejuvenation for hollowing, and you can resume normal exercise 24 hours after treatment. Some patients will find that they can style their hair to cover the temple areas while healing, or a hat may be worn as well. Although many patients will see results very soon afterward, you should expect your final temple augmentation results to settle in at about one to two weeks after your treatment.
Dr. Lewen schedules a follow-up appointment for all patients who undergo temple filler rejuvenation for hollowing two weeks after your treatment is completed in order to assess your results and to review your before and after pictures.
